It’s been a hot second since I’ve talked to you about a date night idea so I thought I’d throw one your way! This date was planned by me and it was a great concept, but we did not execute it properly so it wasn’t the best date we’ve ever done. That being said, make sure you pay attention to the Pro Tips in this read, I gave some crucial advice that would have made the date ten times more fun. Hopefully you will be able to learn from our mistakes.
If you couldn’t tell by the name of this article, we had a Japan themed date night. Naturally that means we had to have sushi for dinner, right? Sushi is one of my favorite things to eat, but unfortunately we don’t get to eat it often. A Japanese theme date night seemed like the perfect reason to get it on the menu. We got our sushi prepackaged from Aldi which sorta seemed like a cop out but it satisfied my craving so it’ll do.
(I’m not sure if egg rolls originated from Japan or not but they sounded good lol).
ProTip #1: Make your own!
When I was originally planning this date night the idea was to make our own sushi, but my mistake was telling Jordan that’s what I wanted to do. He protested saying that it was something that should be left to the professionals, but I wish I would have just gone with my gut! I think it would be so much fun to make our own sushi.
I was coincidentally talking to my friend about sushi today and she said she makes it with imitation crab meat so she doesn’t have to deal with the raw fish I think that’s a great option if you are like my husband and get nervous about handling/eating raw fish… Side note, I think I just talked myself into a redo of this date night. I’ll keep you all posted on how it goes.
In my mind this was such a fun idea. I’ve always been a bit crafty, we we’re going to fold some paper, make some pretty things and as a plus origami paper/directions are pretty affordable. What’s not to like, right? Wrong. I was getting so frustrated with the directions that I almost gave up several times and came to the conclusion that this activity was most definitely was not my jam.
Pro Tip #2: Do your research.
When I went to Hobby Lobby I just looked for the cheapest kit that included directions. Don’t do that. Do not just buy the first, cheapest kit you find. If you put some effort into finding a package you will enjoy this activity far more than I did. Specifically get a set that includes very clear directions preferably with pictures AND super clear wording. The kit I bought only really had pictures, and it got really confusing trying to figure out what to do. Save yourself a headache and buy the set that’s a whole $5 more, just do it.
The Sea of Trees
For those of you who are confused right now, “The Sea of Trees” is a movie. I specifically picked this movie out because it was at least based in Japan to correlate with the theme of date night, and neither of us had seen it yet. In this movie you follow Arthur, played by Matthew Mcconaughey, into Aokigahara also infamously known as the “suicide forest” where he soon runs into another man where they join forces to try to fight their way out of the forest and back to freedom. Overall I’d say it was an okay movie but I definitely wouldn’t watch it again.
Pro Tip #3: Pick a different moive
I said above, but I’ll say it again, I only really picked it because it fit into our theme and neither of us have watched it before. If I were allowed a do over I would probably pick a movie we’ve seen before over “The Sea of Trees”. I wouldn’t say it was a bad movie but there are so many other great movies we could have watched instead. To you I would probably suggest going with either “The Last Samurai” or “The Forest” both are really good movies and fit into the Japanese theme perfectly!
Warning: “The Forest” is watched as a scary movie so if those types of movies aren’t your thing I’d probably stay away from that one too.
